Gastonia Great Places

Incorporated in 1877, Gastonia began as a small depot. Its early growth was spurred by the realignment of the Atlanta & Charlotte Airline Railroad, the charter of the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the advent of steam-powered textile mills. The intersection of these railways and the burgeoning textile industry provided employment and social opportunities. Originally, Gastonia had around 200 residents and covered less than a square mile.
